Conor Lenihan, Minister for Science, Technology, Innovation and Natural Resources has officially launched a scheme expected to generate significant employment across County Mayo over the next six to 12 months.

The numbers signing on in Mayo continue to rise with new Live Register statistics published for May by the CSO. The figures show the bleak unemployment trend continuing with an increase of 371 signing on, bringing the total to 11,420, an increase of 5,422 from May 2008.

Despite having a win in the bag already, Tourmakeady should take this one.

The news that Ronan McGarrity suffered a hairline fracture to his jaw in last weekend’s round of club championship fixtures cast a shadow over the whole round of games last weekend. The Ballina midfielder was forced to leave the action after only a couple of minutes and it looks like he will miss out on next weekend’s Connacht final against Galway which will be a massive blow to Mayo’s chances of dethroning the current Connacht champions in their own patch.

It’s a case of all to play for in most of the groups in the Intermediate championship this weekend. Last year’s beaten finalists Kilmaine look odds on to make it out of section one in top spot. They will face a testing encounter against a Killala side who are currently in second spot in the table on points difference and will be going all guns blazing to keep their own chances alive. The other game in the group promises to be a tough physical battle when Hollymount make the trip to Tourmakeady; neither side will give quarter to the other, but home advantage should be enough to see them make the last eight along with Kilmaine.

Swinford made their way into quarter finals of the Mayo intermediate championship last weekend thanks to a 1-11 to 1-6 win over Davitts in Ballyhaunis. The east Mayo men became the seventh team into the last eight, with one spot left up for grabs in the competition. On Sunday in Bonniconlon Davitts will get their second bite at the cherry when they take on Belmullet in a winner takes all clash at 2pm. The play-off was necessitated by all three sides finishing level on points in their group and one game in the group not being played, and a walk over handed to Belmullet, so points difference couldn’t be taken into consideration.

This weekend sees the Mayo senior club championships reach the last quarter final stage with all eight sides left in the competition having realistic chances of making the last four of the competition. The action gets under way in the senior championship on Saturday evening in Castlebar, which will host two more games on Sunday, with the fourth clash of the round taking place in Ballina on Sunday afternoon.

The four Mayo clubs in the Connacht Junior League 1A all had a bad weekend last time out with Castlebar, Westport, Ballina, and Ballinrobe all going down in round two of the league. Bottom of the table Ballinrobe shipped a 39 point defeat at the hands of table toppers Sligo to leave them rooted to the floor of the table, with Oísin Gill the only man to get a score for Ballinrobe in a 42-3 loss. It was always going to be tough for Ballinrobe this year to make the step up to the top flight. They did manage to get a bonus point in their first game away to OLBC, but last weekend’s hammering at the hands of Sligo could put a serious dent in their title credentials. They do have a shot at redemption this weekend when they make the short trip to Carrowholly where they face the Bulls of Westport. But it will be another tough ask and a losing bonus point is all that they really could hope for.
